Transportation
Engineer (PE)
3 Rocks Engineering & Surveying is seeking a Colorado transportation engineer to lead and grow our transportation practice across Southeast Colorado. The work is roadway and intersection design for private developers, cities, towns, and counties; CDOT Local Agency projects; and a CDOT pursuit that is already under way through a two-year Mentor-Protégé program. You will manage your own projects, price and scope your own proposals, and be the person our public-sector clients call. It’s ideal for a PE who likes owning a project from the first conversation to the final walk-through and who wants to build something in a market with lots of opportunities.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
-
Project Management: Take responsibility for transportation projects from proposal through construction — scope, fee, schedule, budget, and client communication — with a project engineer and drafters supporting you. Current work that you will manage includes street reconstruction, sidewalk and pedestrian improvements funded through the CDOT Local Agency process, intersection improvements, and a parkway extension.
-
Roadway Design: Design roadway, intersection, and sidewalk to AASHTO, CDOT, and local standards.
-
Traffic Engineering: Prepare small traffic studies, access permit applications, and traffic impact analyses for public and private clients. You also may manage and review the work of subconsultant on larger traffic studies.
-
CDOT Pursuit: Carry our CDOT relationship forward by continuing the Mentor-Protégé program, maintaining Region 2 and Region 5 contacts, and renewing our annual Prequalification status— with the goal of winning a CDOT subconsultant role in 2027 and prime work after that.
-
Client Relationships: Build and keep relationships with municipal and county public works staff across Southeast Colorado. This is relationship-driven work and we want to win by being known and trusted before the project is advertised for proposals.
-
Team Development: Guide less experienced engineers and drafters on transportation work and help set the standard for how it gets designed, estimated and delivered.
GOTTA HAVE IT
-
Certification: Professional Engineering (PE) license in Civil Engineering, Colorado licensed (or the ability to obtain a Colorado license by comity within one month).
-
Experience: 6+ years of transportation engineering experience with a focus on public-sector roadway projects in Colorado.
-
MicroStation: Familiar with MicroStation and CDOT plan production standards.
-
Traffic: Able to complete small traffic studies and access permits without outside help.
-
Project Ownership: A track record of running your own projects — scoping, pricing, managing budget, and communicating with clients and reviewing agencies.
-
Communication: Comfortable sitting across the table from a town board, a public works director, or a CDOT project manager.
BONUS POINTS
-
CDOT Local Agency project delivery or CDOT design experience.
-
Civil 3D & MicroStation proficiency.
-
Existing relationships with municipalities, counties, or CDOT Region 2 / Region 5 staff.
-
Grant-funded project experience (DOLA, CDOT Multimodal, Safe Routes to School, or similar).
-
Interest in a long-term leadership path within the firm as we grow.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
-
Salary: $90,000 – $125,000 base annual salary, based on experience and level (Project Engineer through Project Manager).
-
Profit Sharing: Participation in Company Profit Sharing.
-
Pre-Tax Benefits: Section 125 cafeteria plan.
-
Insurance: Employer-sponsored Health, Dental, and Vision insurance, plus Company-paid Life Insurance.
-
Retirement: Retirement plan with Company Match.
-
Time Off: Vacation and Sick time (accruing immediately), Company-paid Volunteer Time, Company-paid maternity leave, plus paid parental leave for all employees through Colorado’s FAMLI program.
-
Perks: Access to the “company garage” of outdoor gear — including company raft, climbing gear, and mountain bike.
